Severo Tapia, also known as ‘Shorty’ to his family, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2018 at the age of 93 years old. Severo is survived by his wife of 74 years Angie, their children Anabelle Gallegos, Charles Tapia, Emily Freebee, Lydia Tapia, Johnnie Tapia, Maria Ricard, Pamela Gutierrez, JR Tapia and preceded in death by his oldest daughter Julie Tapia and son Leroy Tapia; his 22 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren; by his sister Anisetta; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Eaton, Colorado, Severo was a resident of Edgewood, New Mexico, for the past 10 years, but lived in Portales, New Mexico, most of his life. Severo’s work career spanned working at the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming and Borden Peanuts in Portales. A proud and elegant man with a great humor and love for life and family, he spent hours playing his guitar and singing the Spanish music he loved. A celebration of Severo’s life will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church of Las Vegas with viewing at 8:00 A.M. rosary at 9:00 a. m., mass at 10:00 a. m., followed by interment at 11:00 a.m. at the San Jose Cemetery in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Pallbearers will be Anthony Gallegos, Able Mirabal, Eric Tapia, Victor Gallegos, Robert Tapia and Derald Vandawalker. Arrangements were entrusted to Harris Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty, New Mexico.
