Max Milton Cabber Jr. Max passed away on October 15, 2021 just like he wanted to go—in his bed at home in Estancia after a battle with cancer. Max was born in Roswell, NM to Max and Faye Cabber in May 22, 1942 and was big brother to sisters, Karen and Nancy. He graduated Roswell High 1960, then NMMI JC ‘62 and on to Texas Tech. Max then returned to Albuquerque to begin his long career as a self-employed Architectural Designer and General Contractor throughout New Mexico (and a few in Arizona and Texas) that lasted more than 55 years. When he wasn’t working, he was playing—flying small planes, riding a few bulls, hunting, fishing, snow skiing, boating, and buying a new car or truck (as often as possible) and many other “Big Boy Toys” in between! All year round he was spending time with family and friends at Elephant Butte or the Valle Grande, traveling the back roads of NM, sitting at a blackjack table in Vegas or a bar at a rodeo or driving an ATV over the mountains at a NMMI Trail Ride. Max always struck up a conversation with anyone no matter where he was (he never met a stranger) and most of those conversations led to long lasting friendships. Max loved his family very much! He is survived by his soul mate of 46 years, Betty and his three children: Max III, Michael and wife Danette, Amie and husband Derek. He also leaves behind his seven grandchildren; Gage and wife Leslie, Theta and husband Jake, Justin and Brittany, Leighton, Clay and wife Kylee, Katie and husband Andrew, Kristie and husband Pat: all of whom Max was very proud of and what they have accomplished. Max was Great Grandfather to Avery, Liam, Ellie, Lennon, Majanice, Kymani and Great Grand number seven who will be born in July. It is hard to say goodbye, but we all have marvelous, funny, and loving memories to cherish. Cremation has taken place and he will be interred at the columbarium on the campus of NMMI in Roswell on April 22, 2022. Per Max’s wishes there will be no service, but we will have a gathering of friends and family this summer in Torrance County to laugh and share memories. If anyone would like to donate in Max’s memory, please consider New Mexico Military Institute Foundation at NMMI.edu/foundation.
