Leon Chavez

Surrounded by family, Leon (Leo) Chavez age 82 of Torreon NM passed away peacefully on Monday August 7, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Imelda Chavez, daughters Ramona and Charlene B. Chavez of Torreon, Daughter In-Law Donna M. Chavez of Colorado Springs CO, Grandson Matthew R. Chavez of Chugiak AK, Granddaughter Amanda L. Chavez Edwards and husband Brandon Edwards of Colorado Springs, CO. Brothers: Fidel (Neno) Chavez Jr. (Diana), Gilbert Chavez (Maxine), Leroy Chavez (Irene), Tercio Chavez, George Chavez (Rita), Sisters: Angela Diane Valenzuela (Jose), Rosemary Chavez, Concepcion “Concha” Candelaria (+Leroy), In-laws, Reina Chavez (+Elfego), Joe Perea (Susie), Pablo Perea (Kathleen), Richard Vigil (Christina). Uncle Ernie Vigil, Aunt Nestorita, and Aunt Ester Chavez, several relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Leon is preceded in death by his son Lee A. Chavez, his parents Fidel Chavez Sr., and Lourden Chavez, his brothers Natividad Chavez and Ricardo Chavez (+Socorro). Leon was a dedicated member of the Torreon Sociedad de San Jose, a skilled Cement Finisher for over 45 years, served as a member on the Valencia Counseling Board and Torrance County Land Grant Advisory Board and Finance Committee. Leon worked diligently in the community of Torreon and neighboring Torrance County communities. He was instrumental in the preservation of the Torreon Land Grant, the Water System, Community Center and Fire Department. Loving gratitude goes out to all his dear relatives and friends who offered prayers, called, visited and encouraged Leon and supported us through the last three years. A special heartfelt thank you to Leon’s Cousin Dimas Chavez for his inspiring phone calls. Additionally, the Leon Chavez family wishes to thank the staff, Nurses, Nurse Techs, Physical Therapist and Support Team from Roadrunner Hospice who helped with his care. Arrangements have been entrusted to Harris Hanlon Mortuary with services to be held Tuesday August 15, 2023 in Torreon NM at the San Antonio Catholic Church with visitation beginning at 8:30 AM, recitation of the Rosary at 9:00 AM and Mass at 10:00 AM. Internment follows at the Torreon Cemetery. Pall Bearers: Melvin Alderete, Moises Fidel Anaya, Antonio Chavez, George Chavez, Norbert Chavez, Christopher Sanchez. Honorary Pall Bearers: Leon’s God Children – Richard Chavez, Joshua Chavez, Matthew R. Chavez, James Horcasitas, Erica Chavez, Octavia Pilar Richmond Chavez, Corina Chavez Encinas, Cathleen Gurule and Skye Valdez. May the Soul of Leon Chavez Rest in Peace.
