LAVEDA STEELE was born February 3, 1935 in Scurry County, Texas. She passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico on December 19, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband Eldon, parents Riss and Lola Bishop, sisters Roberta Oney and Edith Bishop, and brothers in law Pooch Oney and Bill Wootres. Laveda, the youngest Bishop daughter, was five years old when the family moved to the ranch, where, a few years later she and her sisters witnessed the first atomic bomb test. She graduated from Mountainair High School in 1952 and married Eldon Steele February 14, 1952 in Estancia, NM. Eldon and Laveda moved to Hurley, NM in 1955 where Eldon worked at Kennecott Copper Corporation. Laveda was a homemaker and mother. She and Eldon enjoyed baseball/softball, bowling, square-dancing, camping and visiting with friends. Laveda loved going for walks, visiting with her grandkids, gardening and hummingbirds. She is survived by daughter, Janet Ahrens and husband Brandon; son, Duane Steele and wife Shirley; and her sister Vivian Wootres. She was Mop/Mopo to her three grandchildren; Blake Jakaboski, Ryan Ahrens, and Kevin Steele and her eight great-grandchildren. Laveda’s family would especially like to thank the administrators and staff of Haven Care Fir House in Albuquerque. We greatly appreciate the outstanding love, care and attention you provided Laveda during her time with you. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch. Services will be held in the spring at Mountainair Cemetery.
