John Daniel Garrick

November 8, 1939 — December 28, 2022

Dr. John Daniel Garrick, 83, beloved husband, father, and teacher, entered eternal rest peacefully the morning of December 28, 2022, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. “Dr. John” was born in Reading, PA to father Robert and mother Elizabeth. As the first Garrick to attend college, earned his BA in Philosophy at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA and his Ph. D in English at the University of Pennsylvania. For 62 years he was married to his wife, Sandra Levan Garrick, with whom he raised three sons. It would take a very long book to detail Dr. John’s lifelong vocation as a scholar, teacher, writer, and cultural enthusiast. His career spanned five decades and included university assignments at Notre Dame, Villanova, La Universidad de Barcelona, and secondary schools St. Andrews School in Middletown, DE and Newark Academy in Livingston, NJ. A Fulbright Scholar, he was a leading world authority on Hemingway and the Spanish Civil War. His language fluency was legendary, as was his book and music collection. Dr. John’s teaching career was concentric with his passions, chiefly among them baseball and music. His baseball fandom spanned nine decades from the Reading Indians to the Philadelphia A’s to a fifty-year following of the Baltimore Orioles which included attending the 1979 and 1983 World Series. His love of books, music, and baseball became Garrick men family trademarks and to say his knowledge was encyclopaedical would be euphemistic, not hyperbole. He passed on his other inimitable tastes as well: Spanish tapas, good red wine, anchovy pizza, hard cheeses, chorizo, and his lifelong distaste for fish (“no feesh!”). Dr. John is survived by his loving wife Sandy and sons Jonathan, Jamie and Jordan, and grandchildren Ashlyn, Bretton, and Chloe. Funeral services will be held Thursday January 5, 2023; Rosary at 10:00 AM and Mass at 11:00 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic church in Moriarty, NM followed by the burial at the Stanley Cemetery in Stanley, NM. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty, NM. [in lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to local animal shelters]
