It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother Eslinda Sanchez, more affectionately known as “Nana”. On October 17, 2024, Nana passed away very peacefully at home, in the arms of her children and only weeks before her 100th birthday. The void she has left behind is a testament to the great love and comfort she gifted so many of us in her lifetime.
Born in Tajique, New Mexico on November 29, 1924, to Eduardo and Rufina Otero, Eslinda was the fourth born of 11 children. She was the last surviving member of her siblings and remained close to them all until they departed this world.
On April 15, 1942, Eslinda and Diego Sanchez were married in Tajique and lived there, on the family ranch, for more than 25 years before moving to Estancia township. Diego was called away to serve in the army during World War II and then returned home to his life with Eslinda and their family. Together they had 10 children and were married for over 51 years until he passed away on October 27, 1993. Eslinda always remained a dedicated and loving wife, often speaking fondly of Diego after he passed.
Eslinda was preceded in death by her husband Diego, son Julian Sanchez, daughter Angel Sanchez, five infant sons, granddaughter D’Aun “DeeDee” Sedillo-Zamora, grandson Esequiel Sedillo, great-grandson Isaiah Sanchez; her parents Eduardo and Rufina; her brothers Manuel, Albino, Ruben, Onefre, Eduardo Jr., and David Otero; and her sisters Eulala Barela, Aurora Chavez, Lugie Chavez, and Betsy Aragon.
She is survived by daughters Louella Bobbe (Bill) and Lola Sedillo (Raymond) and son Paul Sanchez. Grandsons Melvin Brown (Julie), Brian Sanchez (Emily), Randy Sanchez (Hannah), and Daniel Sanchez (Victoria). Granddaughters Yolanda Merritt (Patrick), Yevette de France (Simon), Diamantina Sanchez, and Iisa Sanchez, as well as 20 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Nana was a point of light in the lives of so many and for so long. She was a deeply religious woman and was comforted by her belief in God. She lived through much loss and suffering but never lost faith in her belief that she would one day reunite with her loved ones. It was this unwavering faith that allowed her to live her long life with much hope and joy. Nana chose to live a life of happiness and could light up a room with her warm smile and beautiful laugh. We can all share in her lightness of spirit to lift our hearts in this time of grieving. She always had much time, patience, love, care, and joy to share with all. For that, she will remain a cherished part of our hearts forever.
May you now rest in beauty and peace our beloved Nanita.
