Dollie Self June 25, 1924 - - November 11, 2019 Dorothy “Dollie” Self (Age 95) passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 11, 2019. Dollie, the youngest of seven children, was born and raised 12 miles NW of Elida by parents Joe and Jennie Powell, all of whom preceded her in death. Dollie graduated from Elida high school and worked for Boeing Aircraft during WWII. In 1947, Dollie married R. E. Self, following his Army service in WWII. She and R.E. raised two daughters and a son, Ann, Nancy, and Alan. They also raised a nephew and two nieces, Kelsey, Sandra, and Linda Smith following the death of their parents in an auto accident. Dollie and R.E. are survived by eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Dollie and R.E. made their living ranching at the Lee homestead near Elida until R.E.’s death in 1999. Dollie was a classic rancher’s wife providing support for the many community cattle round-ups, as well as horseback accompaniment with R.E. for the challenging requirements of tending cattle. Dollie lived her last few years with her daughters in Independence, Oregon, where she busied herself with quilting and a strong love of historical books. She recently returned to her revered New Mexico to be cared for by her son and extended family in Edgewood, New Mexico. There will be no immediate service, but a memorial gathering of family and friends is planned near Elida, New Mexico, in June of 2020. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Elida Volunteer Fire Department which they actively supported.
