Henry Jay Brown

Henry Jay Brown, son of the late Benjamin F. Brown (II) and Ruth Gravley Brown died on July 23, 2016, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Henry was born at Greenville General Hospital; raised in Travelers Rest; graduated from Travelers Rest High School; and attended Clemson University at the former Greenville branch, majoring/minoring in psychology/political science. He worked at the Greenville News as a proofreader for over 3 years, beginning while still a Clemson student. He was reared by kind and godly parents and was a member of Clearview Baptist Church growing up with his family. As a young man, Henry moved to New York City where he worked in advertising for more than 40 years in a number of capacities including editor, copy editor and proofreader at several major ad agencies, including McCann; Bozell; Lowe and Partners; Wunderman; Ogilvie; and Grey New York, working on well-known, common American brands. His talents and professionalism earned him great respect among his peers. As a man who was spiritually connected to Christ, he attended church at the forward thinking Interdenominational Riverside Church among others, such as Marble Collegiate Church, in Manhattan. Henry had a love of people that was unsurpassed and he made friends wherever he went; his laughter was contagious. He was an avid traveler and had countless adventures all over the globe. He had a special love for Italy and Mexico, where he visited the most, and enjoyed learning the languages to make the visits more interesting. He amassed an army of friends who will remember him for his empathy, his generosity of spirit, and his love of those he cherished. Although divided by geography, his love for his family remained foremost and he made regular visits to Greenville over all the years to visit with them. Upon his recent retirement from Grey New York, Henry moved to Albuquerque, a town he considered a second home for over 30 years and where he made several close friendships. He was able to take delight in the beautiful canvas it provided during the last months of his life and he entered a cancer care hospice there with a clear mind and a peaceful spirit. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sister Martha B. Richardson and her husband Larry Richardson. He is survived by sisters Judy B. Hooper and husband Donnie Hooper of Piedmont and Sarah Brown of Greenville; niece Lisa Richardson of Simpsonville; nephews Todd Richardson and wife Ashley of Alabaster, AL; Craig Richardson and wife Sharon of Taylors; Wesley Davis and wife April of Townville, SC; and Shannon Davis and wife Heesuny of Seoul, South Korea; 7 grand-nieces and nephews; and 3 great-grand nieces and nephews; and special cousin, Brenda Brown.
