Chief Petty Officer, US Navy Ret., Elmer E. (Whitey) Whiteman, 83, passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2016, in Estancia, N.M. He was born on September 22, 1932, in Wagon Mound, New Mexico, to the late William (Billy) and Lessie Whiteman, and was a graduate of Cimarron High School. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Rozelle Whiteman DeIorio, and his son, Keith, and is survived by his wife Marilyn, two sons Russell Whiteman of Acworth, Georgia and Bryan Whiteman (Tina) of Newton Falls, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Dona Fuerst of Olympia, Washington and Darcy Waters (Joe) of South Bend, Indiana; a sister Edith Coffman of Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren Justin Whiteman, Carley Whiteman, Alicia Kulp, and Michael Waters, and great-granddaughter Italia Whiteman. The Whiteman family was an early settler of the Colfax County area; his family originally came to New Mexico on the Santa Fe Trail from Independence, Missouri. He retired from the US Navy Submarine Force after serving for twenty years. On returning to New Mexico he worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory retiring from there in 1989. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, square dancing, and spent a number of years breeding and raising his beloved Appaloosa horses. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Harris-Hanlon Mortuary. He will be laid to rest at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
