Jose Raphael “Ralph” Anaya, 76, passed away on March 13, 2016, at his home in Moriarty, N.M. Born on April 22, 1939, the eighth child of Lauriano and Eufracia (Martinez) Anaya. Ralph was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and a graduate of Moriarty High School. After attending Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M., Ralph joined the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Sellers for 4 years.
After military service Ralph returned to Moriarty where he worked at Mikes Friendly Store for over 40 years. He became a volunteer firefighter, eventually serving as Fire Chief of the Moriarty Volunteer Fire Department from 1978-1982. He was also a member of the Moriarty Chamber of Commerce and the Moriarty Cemetery Association. After retiring he became a volunteer food distributor for the St. Vincent De Paul Food Bank.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his sister, Manuelita “Cookie” Konz, her husband, Owen Konz and brother, Antonio Anaya; nieces, Celestina Anaya, Angie Davis Bynum, Marilyn Kelly, and Shirley Kay Anaya; a nephew, Baby Robert Anaya; brother-in-law John Davis, and sister-in-law Elnora Anaya.
Ralph is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Filandro and Stella Anaya, Mike and Mary Anaya, and Carlos and Shari Anaya, all of Moriarty; brothers Tomey Anaya of Albuquerque, N.M., Gabriel Anaya of Las Cruces, N.M., and former Governor Toney Anaya and his wife Elaine of Santa Fe, N.M.; sisters Rita Davis of Moriarty, and Mary Louise Jaramillo and her husband Pat of Odessa, TX; 31 nieces and nephews, and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
A Viewing is scheduled on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 from 3:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. at the Harris Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty. Funeral Services will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Moriarty: a Rosary will be held on Wednesday, March 16 at 7:00 P.M., and the Celebration of Mass will be on Thursday, March 17, at 10:00 A.M., followed by Internment at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Moriarty. Pallbearers will be Fred Anaya, Steve Anaya, John Wayne Davis, Richard Anaya, Antonio Anaya Jr., Matthew Anaya, Carlos Anthony Jaramillo and Brendan Sullivan. Arrangements are entrusted to Harris Hanlon Mortuary.
