Ernest, “Ernie”, A.K.A. “Jumpo” Richard Gallegos Sr., was born on October 28, 1957 and peacefully passed away on March 18, 2015 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was a much beloved and devoted son, husband, father, grandpa, uncle and family member.
Ernie worked for more than 30 years at the University of New Mexico Student Union as a Sous-Chef, finally deciding to retire in 2014. He was an excellent cook and many of us benefited greatly from his delicious preparations at family and friend gatherings. Ernie was a devoted father who adored spending time with his sons watching them grow up into fine young men. He loved coaching for their baseball teams as well as cheering them on. Ernie had the same loving devotion for his grandchildren, always looking for opportunities to spend time and create memories with them. Some of his other passions in life included gardening and fishing trips with his sons and brothers. Another favorite pastime of his was reading, especially his favorite author, Stephen King. Ernie was deeply in love with his wife Yvonne, and loved to dance with her in the living room. Ernie was an avid sports fan and loved to cheer on the LA Lakers, LA Dodgers and UNM Lobos. Ernie’s favorite sport of all was football and cheering on the Denver Broncos. Yvonne recalls the steaks that he made during the games and the uplifting banter of rooting on his team. He had a warm heart and a deep love for friends and family. Ernie always helped anyone in need. He will be greatly missed by all.
