Mattie Lorene Floyd

February 10, 1921 — December 14, 2013

Mattie Lorene Floyd was born to James Edgar and Maude Alexander Polk on February 10,1921 in Bowlegs, Ok and passed on to be with her Lord peacefully in the home she shared with her daughter on December 14, 2013. She was the oldest of seven including two brothers, Oather Mindon and Alexander K and four sisters, Juanita Mildred, Wencil Lucille, Dezree and Laura Bell. The family of five (James, Maude, Mattie, Oather and Juanita) moved to Mountainair, NM in 1934. It was there she met and married the love of her life Francis Houston Floyd on January 12, 1940. Her sister, Juanita married Houston’s brother Levator in Oct. of 1940. Her parents with Oather, and the youngest four children left Mountainair to work in the fruit in Nevada, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. They ended up settling in Bell, CA in1942 Mattie and Houston stayed in the Mountainair area and had six children, Newton Edgar, Walter Edward, Emmitt Lee, Frances Lorene, Elizabeth Ann and Kenneth Houston. After Houston’s death in November 1955, she raised her six children on the farm. The family was active in the Baptist church in Mountainair and other activities in the area. In 1962, her two oldest sons married and started her legacy of grandchildren. In 1964, she moved herself and her four youngest children to Strathmore, CA to be near her father and mother. She went to training and began working as a nurse’s aide at Sierra View District Hospital in June of 1965 until she retired in June of 1990 after 25 years. She also opened and helped run a ceramic shop with her two daughters and her sister Juanita. She was an active member of Strathmore First Baptist Church and served on several committees. Mattie was preceded to heaven by her husband, parents, son - Emmitt, brother – Oather, sister – Juanita, several in-laws and several nephews. She is now enjoying a big family reunion with all of the extended family members and friends that have come into her 90+ years of life. She is survived by her sons, Newton and wife Helen of Belen NM, Walter of Seguin TX, Kenneth and wife Debera of Shandon CA, daughters Lorene and Elizabeth of Porterville CA. She is also leaving behind her legacy of 12 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. There will be a Graveside Service on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Noon at the Mountainair Cemetery with Pastor Tony Reynolds officiating. Pallbearers will be Mattie’s grandsons, great-grandson and son, Walter Floyd Jr., Robert Floyd, Houston Floyd, Jeramy Floyd, Edward Woodward V and Kenneth Floyd.
