Glenn G. Overlander

June 16, 1930 — November 29, 2013

GLENN G. OVERLANDER, 83, of Moriarty, NM passed away on Friday, November 29, 2013 in Albuquerque, NM. Glenn was born June 16, 1930 at home in the country outside of Pontiac, Michigan to Glenn Gordon and Jennie (Scantland) Overlander Sr. As a boy he had a horse and was very interested in airplanes. He hung out at the Nan-Bar Airport where he learned to fly while working part time for one of the small businesses. When he was a senior in high school the family moved to Hobbs, NM. He joined the Air Force in July of 1950 when the Korean War was on, and he was sent to Wheeler Air Force Base in Libya. After serving four years, he returned to Hobbs where he worked in the oil fields. Still interested in flying, he had earned his Commercial Airman’s certificate using the GI bill. He married Lila Fay Harkins in 1955. When someone told him of a job opening as an air traffic controller, he applied and was hired by the Federal Aviation Administration in Albuquerque in 1957. Lila Fay passed away in 1982. Glenn married his present wife Georgia in 1983. She was an FAA co-worker who quit work shortly after they married. Motorcycling was one of their hobbies. They joined the Christian Motorcycle Association and went on many trips with their friends. Their other hobby was flying model airplanes. When flying full scale airplanes became too expensive, a friend said “Come out with me and watch me fly my model airplane.” Soon the spare bedroom of their home was converted into “the hangar” where Glenn built the models. Glenn retired from the FAA in 1985 and moved to the Moriarty area in 1988. He joined in the community activities through the Chamber of Commerce, Moriarty Airport Committee, Pinto Bean Fiesta Committee, and church affiliations. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife. He is survived by his wife Georgia Overlander of Moriarty; son Gordon Keith Overlander of Edgewood; daughter Teri Kreider of Albuquerque; sisters Marie Rieken of Independence, OR and Judy Watts of Hobbs, NM; brother Walter Overlander of Florida. There will be a Funeral Service at the Moriarty Church of Christ on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at 10:00AM with John C. Booth Jr. officiating. Pallbearers will be Gordon Overlander, Walter Overlander, Donald Rieken, Robert Watts, Leon Jackson and Jack Willmas. Burial will follow the service at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Moriarty, NM. There will be a meal for friends and family at the Church of Christ following the burial. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to Bethel Community Storehouse.
