Chester Isham Hill

Chester Isham Hill, 90 resident and native of the Edgewood area passed away on Sunday October 20th.. He was born in Venus, NM (now Edgewood) on January 20, 1923. Growing up his parents Joe B. and Mae Madole Hill maintained homes in Albuquerque and on the family ranch and farm in Edgewood. He graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1941 and attended the University of New Mexico until he entered the Army in 1944. He served his country as a bazooka carrier in the 5th Infantry Division, seeing combat in the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhine Crossing and the Ruhr Pocket. He returned to New Mexico where he farmed and ranched on the family homestead. He also became a homebuilder in Albuquerque. He married Nancy L. Simpson of Stephenville Texas in 1948. He continued to maintain residences in Albuquerque and Edgewood until 1974 after which he and Nancy resided full time in Edgewood. He was a member of the Fruit Avenue Baptist Church in Albuquerque for over seventy years, serving as a Deacon until 2007. He was a member of Valley View Christian Church at the time of his going home to be with the Lord. He enjoyed telling locals about the history of the Edgewood area and that he was the oldest native of Edgewood. He was very involved with the Edgewood Senior Center for the last ten years of his life, and enjoyed the writing group where he wrote of life and times in early Edgewood. He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters; J. Howard Hill, Don Hill, Alta Mae Jensen, Lois Sievert, Maxine Hopping and Kenneth Hill. His beloved Nancy went to be with the Lord in 2003. He is survived by one brother Fred Hill of Albuquerque and by two sons, Clifford Hill of Albuquerque and Brad Hill, Mayor of Edgewood, and by Brad’s wife Tammy Lucadamo Hill. He had four grandchildren Monica Anderson of Albuquerque, Collette Hill of Austin, Texas, Ian Hill and Spencer Hill of Edgewood. He had two great grandchildren Antonio and Elodie Montoya of Albuquerque. Funeral service will be held at Valley View Christian Church in Edgewood on Tuesday, October 29 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastors Brandon Shaffer and Leonard Navarre officiating. Pallbearers will be Travis Darnell, Mike Turner, Louie Byrant, Ralph Hill, Chuck Ring, and Howard Calkins. Burial will follow the service at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:15.
