BARBARITA ISABEL MONTOYA, 90, a life long resident of Escobosa, New Mexico peacefully passed away at her home on Thursday, February 1, 2013. Barbarita was born in Juan Tomas, NM on September 22nd, 1922 to Rosendo and Anita Martinez. She married Tomas Montoya of Escobosa, NM on September 13, 1940 in Albuquerque, NM. Barbarita was a member of San Isidro, a Mission Church of Holy Child Parish.
Barbarita Martinez Montoya, a lifelong, self educated, historian of Escobosa, NM was welcomed into the arms of our Lord surrounded by her devoted children. A matriarchal force of love and faith. Renowned curandera, midwife, and published hymnist of our sacred alabados. She leaves behind a legacy of educators, healers, public servants and defenders of the faith. A trail blazer, ahead of her time, who will be greatly missed.
Barbarita was preceded in death by her parents Rosendo and Anita (Garcia) Martinez; great grandmother Miquela Lujan; husband Tomas Montoya; and children Sonny Montoya, Camilita Montoya, Eusebio Montoya, Albino Montoya, and John Montoya. She is survived by her son Pablo Montoya of Escobosa, NM; daughters Sally Montoya of Albuquerque, NM, Bertha Medina and her husband Robert of Santa Fe, NM, Norma Chavez and her husband Dennis of Tajique, NM, Irene Bachicha and her husband Fernando of Escobosa, NM, and Juanita Montoya of Escobosa, NM; fourteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. There will be a Rosary on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at 5:00PM at Holy Child Church in Tijeras, NM. There will also be a Rosary on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at San Isidro Mission Church in Escobosa, NM at 7:00PM. The Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at San Isidro Church at 10:00AM with Rev. Fr. Granito officiating. Burial will follow at Escobosa Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dennis Chavez, Fernando Bachicha, Patrick Salas, Tomas Medina, Antonio Medina and Lucas Bachicha. Honorary Pallbearers will be Servando Gutierrez, Robert Medina, Andrew Gutierrez and Arturo Montoya.
